Our instructional staff will do their best to accommodation same day requests within the scope of the program and resources available to them at the time if a request was not submitted prior to the program. Frequently Asked Questions How are accommodations determined? To qualify for accommodations, students must provide supporting medical or other documentation (e.g., physician statements, functional assessment forms, psychoeducational assessments). Some of these documents contain recommendations for accommodations. AHASTI then collaborates with each student to discuss the most appropriate accommodations to meet the student's needs while aligning with the program's competency profile and applicable legislative and/or academic requirements. How are Accommodation Decisions Guided? Human Rights Legislation: There are 15 grounds under which individuals are protected. AHASTI has a duty to accommodate students with disabilities in higher education to the extent that doing so would impose undue hardship on AHASTI, while complying with all applicable legislative and industry requirements. Formal documentation to support accommodation is required. At AHASTI, we require students to provide formal documentation in the form of one or more of the following: Psycho-educational assessments completed by registered psychologists Functional limitations assessments completed by medical practitioners Detailed medical letters from medical practitioners. Collaboration among the student, instructor, and AHASTI administrator. What does undue hardship mean? A situation where accommodating a student with disabilities leads to unreasonable and excessive challenges for AHASTI. This includes but is not limited to situations where: a) The accommodation significantly interferes with the rights of other students; b) The accommodation creates health and/or safety concerns; c) The financial cost of the accommodation is excessive, in the context of AHASTI as a whole; and/or d) The accommodation would result in a necessary course or program requirement not being met. What is my responsibility as a student in the accommodation process? Initiate the accommodation request by contacting AHASTI before the start of the program. (6-8 weeks prior is preferred, minimum 30 days). Provide necessary documentation to support the request. Meet with an AHASTI staff member to discuss appropriate accommodations. I am struggling in areas of my class, where can I get help? The best first step is to speak with your instructor. They may be able to provide suggestions for completing your work.
